How many times have you been in a spirited discussion about weight loss? Many people seem to have very strong opinions on the matter, whether or not they have gotten the longterm weight loss results they have wanted. There are plenty of authors and YouTube content creators out there who claim to know the secret for weight loss. All too often the secret turns out to be some re-packaged, re-branded snake oil in terms of product and/or philosophy.
This opinion blog post is for you because there is a secret to achieving the weight loss you desire. It’s difficult to think of anyone who can accomplish the goal of longterm weight loss without knowing this secret.
Let’s start
Speaking to a couple of acquaintances the other day, the subject of meal frequency and weight loss was being brought up. One of the gentlemen let us know how he has now been out of his weight loss game for a while because he only has time to eat three meals -vice his normal five meals- per day. He was telling the group how reducing his meal frequency was “slowing down his metabolism” and “switching him from fat-burning mode to fat-storage mode.”
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding. Proverbs 17:28 (KJV)
It’s an objective in my life to resist being foolish, so I began to biting my tongue early in the conversation. As I was not actively commenting on his seemingly incomplete weight loss philosophy, I found myself smiling and nodding more and more.
My smiling and nodding seemed to be cues for him to go more into depth of his weight loss philosophy which was now sounding a lot like that YouTube ad with the shirtless guy who has a pizza and a salad in his hands. This led to a great deal of mental face-palming on my end.
As he was continuing the conversation-turned-lecture, I was somehow managing to mentally pull myself out of my disdain. I began to notice that though he was misunderstanding that an energy deficit (taking in less calories than you are expending) is the mechanism of weight loss, he was at least internalizing the one secret for it.
His initial griping about not being able to stick to his meal frequency plan that was leading him to believe his “metabolism was slowing down” was really him acknowledging that was not being consistent.
His lack of consistency seemed to lead him out of his caloric deficit, stalling his weight loss, and steering him to incorrectly believe he has metabolic issues.
Just doing a small amount of scholarly research, it’s obvious that a negative energy balance leads to weight loss. The secret to being in that negative energy balance state for an adequate period of time to achieve your weight loss goals is consistency.
Consistency is key
There are many ways to get into a caloric deficit. Some strategies have been named and branded while others actually come with a particular culture attached to them. Whatever the way, your success or failure in longterm weight loss ultimately depends on your level of consistency in a program of sustained negative energy balance.
In my opinion, understanding and embracing your Big Rocks will help dramatically with your consistency. However, if there is another way that helps you consistently stay in a caloric deficit until you hit your weight loss goal, go for it!
Most fad diets and weight loss programs sold to you by Yo-yo Diet Profiteers do cause you to go into a caloric deficit.
That’s why you tend to initially experience some weight loss.
The trick is that usually these lackluster weight loss programs are just not able to be adhered to for the longterm.
In other words, it is nearly impossible for you to be consistent.
